Mastercard debuts live AI agent transaction in Hong Kong
Mastercard has completed its first live authenticated agentic transaction in Hong Kong using Mastercard Agent Pay, with an artificial intelligence (AI) agent booking a ride to Hong Kong International Airport through hoppa.
The firm said in a press release that the AI agent connected to the global mobility provider’s taxi and airport limousine network via CardInfoLink.
The transaction involved HSBC and DBS Hong Kong, with similar transactions being supported across card types issued by Citi Hong Kong, Hang Seng Bank, Standard Chartered Hong Kong, and Mox Bank.
The system used tokenised credentials with Mastercard Payment Passkeys, with each AI agent using a Mastercard Agentic Token issued specifically for that agent.
Consumer consent was captured and purchase confirmation was completed through Mastercard Payment Passkeys.
Helena Chen, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Hong Kong & Macau at Mastercard, said the pilot demonstrates how AI can simplify travel whilst maintaining security in payments.
Mastercard plans to expand agentic transaction use cases across transportation, travel, entertainment, and retail.
The company has also established a regional AI Centre of Excellence in Singapore, where it is working with large language model providers and deploying teams across the region for agentic commerce.
The firm has previously completed authenticated agentic transactions in Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Malaysia, India, South Korea, and Taiwan.
