Cross border QR payments surge by 143%, Thai partners with three major Chinese payment institutions to open up payment channels between China and Thailand
Thai Headline News Agency: According to Thai media reports, National ITMX Limited (NITMX) is a provider of infrastructure services for Thailand's national payment system, responsible for managing and exchanging interbank transactions in Thailand. Recently, the company disclosed that it is continuing to promote international cooperation and expansion.
NITMX has established cooperative relationships with three major payment service providers from China, namely UnionPay International, Ant International, and Tenpay Payment Technology Co., Ltd. After signing a memorandum of understanding and continuing to promote system integration, it will fully realize cross-border payment system interconnection between Thailand and China.
According to the latest data released by NITMX in December 2025, the total transaction volume of cross-border QR code payment at the entry end reached 809.74 million Thai baht, an increase of 143% compared to the same period last year, reflecting the rapid leap of foreign tourists' consumption through digital payment systems.
Among the top three countries with the highest cross-border QR code payment transaction amounts in December 2025, China ranks first with a transaction volume of 409.92 million Thai baht; Malaysia ranks second with a transaction volume of 174.99 million Thai baht; Laos ranks third with a transaction volume of 70.56 million Thai baht.
The cooperation between NITMX and UnionPay International, Ant International, and Tenpay payment technology is not only the docking of payment infrastructure between China and Thailand, but also an important starting point for Thailand's financial system to access the global payment network. It helps to enhance Thailand's position as a digital payment hub in Asia, and promote the overall upgrade of the payment system under a secure, stable, and internationally compliant system.
Chinese tourists have jumped to the top in the amount of consumption through Thai QR codes, which is seen as an important milestone, clearly reflecting that cross-border payment cooperation between China and Thailand has not only stayed at the policy level, but has become a practical system that effectively reduces payment barriers for tourists, expands business opportunities for Thai operators, and provides substantial support for Thailand's tourism industry and overall economic growth.
